Design your own home plans to make your dream home

You may be overwhelmed at the thought to design your own home plans. It isn’t as difficult as you think. You’ll reserve the actual blueprint work to the professionals, but you can design your own home plans on graph paper so you can bring it to the architect. Here are some steps to design your own home plans.

Before sitting down to design your own home plans on graph paper, list what your family needs. Put numbers next to bedrooms, bathrooms and the size of the rooms. Look in home design books and magazines to decide the layout of the rooms. Do want an island in the kitchen? Do you want the master bedroom on a different floor than the other bedrooms? What type of porch do you want? Write down everything you decide.

The next step is to either break out the graph paper or use special software to design your own home plans. If you use graph paper, always draw to scale and be careful to make all your plans accurate to what you want. Software may be easier than drawing and some programs let you insert virtual furniture to the plans so you can see how your existing belongings fit.

After you design your own home plans on graph paper or with software, bring it to an architect. S/he can spot any problems with your plans and give suggestions to make your plans better. Don’t let the architect talk you out of things you really want. Try to find an architect that will try to find solutions to make your dreams happen.
