Southwestern home plans are beautiful homes that blend several influences. It started with the Pueblo styles of Native Americans and then melded with the Spanish style. Later, American settlers moving west contributed to the more modern types of Southwestern home plans. The style eventually left the southwest and can be found popping up all over America, and even into other countries.

Southwestern home plans can go by several names. Santa Fe is a popular name. In America, "Spanish" style is often has more of a southwest feel. Adobe houses (named after the building material) is also a name that refers to the southwest style.

Not only southwestern home plans give the feel of the old and new worlds combining. Interior design and the color schemes of the southwest also contribute. Common colors associated with the southwest style are dusty rose, blue, beige and green.

Adobe is a common building material for southwestern home plans. It is a clay that is dried into bricks. Faux adobe finishes are available.  The simplicity of adobe, plus the touch of nature it bring to the home, makes it a very popular choice. It is a player in the arts and crafts home movement.
